Blind windows
Sound design workshop by John Duncan
Accademia di belle arti di Bologna
2009
The window is commonly associated to the sense of sight, because through it we can establish visual contact indoor or outdoor. A blind window destabilizes the interpretation and use of the object, a window that can listen gives add a disturbing sense. This installation is inspired on a surrealist painting by Rene Magritte "The Telescope" 1963, and reproduce everyday voices and sounds, that have been recorded for a month using as microphones the windows glass of my room. By reversing the recording process to reproduction the window becomes a speaker and suspended in the middle of the exhibition room it becomes blind, losing it's main function, playing only surrealistic sounds in an infinite loop
